FDA proposes updates to infant formula nutrient requirements
The Food and Drug Administration Oct. 29 issued a proposed rule to update infant formula nutrient requirements, the first such update since 1998. The proposal would update the minimum and/or maximum levels of iodine, manganese, and vitamins A and D, and reaffirm existing requirements for chloride, potassium, selenium and sodium. The rule also proposes to change the units of measure for vitamins A and D. Additionally, it proposes requesting public input on potential requirements for ingredients currently not required in infant formula but commonly added by manufacturers due to their nutritional value. The FDA is accepting comments on the proposed rule through Feb. 26, 2027.
